Sandra Leonard (b.1960, Germany) is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Chicago. She creates paintings, wearable sculpture and performance art. In the last 30 years she has been involved in numerous performances, improvised theater and installation projects. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2014 Leonard was selected as a Featured Artist for the citywide annual event Chicago’s Artist Month and in 2017 she represented the Beverly ward in the "50 x 50" show at the Chicago Cultural Center. She has also designed interactive costumes for museums including the Art Institute of Chicago in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus. In 2021 she had two solo exhibits “Sandra Leonard: Elements of the Imagination” at  Beverly Arts Center and “Sandra Leonard: Unexpected Narratives with Flora and Fauna” at Evanston Art Center. Leonard has also curated several exhibitions, most recently a group exhibition “Absurdity:In Dada We Trust”, 2023 and solo exhibit “Pshshshsh”, for Ukrainian artist Valeria Tarensko, 2024. In 2023/2024 she served on the Curatorial Board of the Beverly Arts Center and established the BAC gallery committee. In 2024 Leonard was the recipient of the DCASE grant, funding her most recent wearable sculpture performance “Unexpected Narratives” at Alma Gallery in collaboration with dancers from Still Inspired Dance Company. This year she was selected to attend the Vermont Studio Center Residency where she will work on a new series of large paintings.
